Type Design & Specimens in New York

Custom and customised typefaces, drawn in-house and shown as specimens rather than as generic type samples.

Pencil and digital sketches of letterforms in progress.

Type design is the part of the practice that takes the longest and shows up the least directly — most clients get a customised cut of an existing face, built to carry one identity, rather than a fully original typeface. Either way, the type is drawn in-house and shown as a specimen before it goes anywhere near a logo.

What I offer

  • A customised typeface built from an existing base, adjusted for a specific brand
  • A small original typeface — usually a display weight, not a full text family — for a logotype or headline system
  • A specimen sheet or booklet showing the full character set and a few sizes
  • Licensing set up for the client's own use on their materials
  • Production-ready font files for print and screen

How to work together

Send an enquiry describing where the type will be used — a logotype, a packaging system, a poster series — since that shapes whether a customised or original approach makes more sense. I reply with fit and a rough timeline.

Price

A customised typeface is quoted lower than a fully original one, since less of the letterform work starts from nothing; both are priced once the character set and intended use are clear.

Questions

Will I own the typeface?

A fully custom typeface is usually licensed for your use only; a customised typeface follows the licence of its base face, which I'll confirm before starting.

Can I see a specimen before committing to the full character set?

Yes — a short specimen covering the core letters and a couple of weights is usually the first deliverable, before the rest of the set is drawn.
