Type Design & Specimens in London
Custom typefaces and specimen pages drawn for a single project's voice.
A typeface drawn for a single project is a rare thing. Custom type sits at the intersection of graphic design, calligraphy and engineering — each letter must work alone and in sequence, at small sizes and large, and the whole must feel like one voice. I draw faces for projects where the typography is inseparable from the idea.

How to order
Write describing the project and what the type needs to do — is it for headlines, body text, packaging, display? What's the tone — formal, friendly, editorial? Any constraints, like a particular weight range or script you want to draw from? I'll respond with a proposal, timeline and fee.
Price note
Custom typefaces start from £4,000 and can run significantly higher depending on the character set, the number of weights and languages, and the complexity of forms. A full proposal with a detailed fee is given after the initial brief.
Questions
How many weights can a custom face have?
This is agreed in the brief. A single weight for display is quite different from a family with multiple weights for both headlines and body text. We'll scope this early.
Can I use the typeface after the project ends?
Licensing is set out in writing before work begins. Some projects include extended use rights; others are one-off deliverables. This is part of the initial agreement.
How long does the design process take?
Custom type usually takes eight to twelve weeks, depending on the scope — a single display weight is faster than a full family with multiple scripts and extended character sets.
